Tooth Extractions
This is the most common procedure oral surgeons perform. Extractions are sometimes necessary if wisdom teeth start growing in at the wrong angle or placement. Sometimes it is necessary to extract a functional tooth when there is a severe injury or infection, or too broken down to repair.
Why are the Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
The wisdom teeth will appear when you’re between the age of 17 and 25 years. There are some people who never develop wisdom teeth. For others, the wisdom teeth will come out normally, and there won’t be any issues. There are some people who develop wisdom teeth that are impacted. The teeth won’t have enough room to erupt while in the mouth. The impacted wisdom teeth can erupt partially.
The impacted wisdom teeth can:
Grow at an angle towards the mouth’s back
Grow at an angle towards the second molar (the tooth in front of it)
Grow straight down or up like a normal tooth but stay trapped in the jawbone
Grow at a right angle to your other teeth
Problems Associated with Impacted Wisdom Teeth
If you have impacted wisdom teeth, they’ll need to be pulled out if you experience the following issues:
Pain
Tooth decay because of the erupted wisdom tooth
Damage to the surrounding bone or nearby teeth
Gum disease or infection
Complications with treatments meant to straighten other teeth
Developing a fluid-filled sac around your wisdom teeth
Dental Implants
This is a wonderful method of tooth replacement. A growing number of people prefer over dentures or bridges. It helps replace a missing tooth without damaging the neighboring teeth, as well as maintaining the health of the underlying bone structure. Dental implants require a thorough knowledge of the condition of the jawbone and the area surrounding the tooth to be replaced to ensure that the procedure is a success.
At times, a sinus lift is necessary in order to obtain adequate length of the implant screw for successful results. A 3 dimensional scan helps identify if one is needed. Healing time for the placement of an implant can range from 3-6 months before it can be restored with a crown. Once the procedure is finished, the patient now has a tooth again and can floss, brush, and eat normally once again.
